March 2025 Procreate Designs

Looking back on the art I’ve been making for the past few months I’ve done quite a bit of digital work.  I started really delving into Procreate when we went on Vacation earlier this year, and I haven’t stopped exploring the possibilities since.   While planning for our vacation in late February and early March of his year I opted to take only my camera and iPad.  No knitting, no sketch book, no art supplies.  This was the first time I’d ever taken only my iPad, with the intent of creating art while on a vacation.  I had a plan to limit my supplies and challenge myself to only using procreate.  My plan worked, I learned a lot about procreate and I enjoyed to process.   The biggest thing I learned was how very freeing being able to sit on the couch or the porch at night with just an iPad and a pencil was.  There was no figuring out where to put supplies, or how to juggle a sketchbook on my lap, or being confined to the table.  The other bonus ...

Using Patterned Paper to Build a Scene - Altenew Comfy Couch

I warned you that there'd be more cute furniture cards. Today, I wanted to share some ideas for using patterned paper to build fun scene cards.  This super couch from Altenew required a fun scene, so I built two options.

For the green couch, I pulled some vintage-looking patterned paper with small print from my stash for the wallpaper and had a 6x6 sheet of small bricks that I cut into enough strips to get four cards.

I used Copics to color my couch in a shade of green to match the carpet, with some blue-violet accent pillows and lamp.  Once colored I fussy cut the couch and lamp for the scene.

Time to build the scene.  I ink-blended Distress Oxide in Ice Spruce across the bottom of a white panel.  I used a texture stamp with Stormy Sky and Pumice Stone Distress Ink to create a carpet effect.  I cut the patterned paper I chose for the wallpaper in half for two cards and added it to the top of the card.  Then I added the strip of bricks to my card.  To create a more finished scene I added a 1/4-inch strip of paper for a baseboard.

With my room complete, it was time to furnish it with my cute couch and lamp.

For the warm grey couch cards, I found a small striped floral print to use as the wallpaper and a couple more strips of the little brick paper.  For the floor of these, I built a wood floor using Distress Inks in Brushed Corduroy and Vintage Photo, stamping the texture in Walnut Stain.

Building the scene was a rinse and repeat of the first one, with a color palette change and some wall art.  I colored my couch with warm greys and accented it with some pale red-violet pillows to match the wallpaper.  I skipped the lamp and used a Tim Holtz Vintage Lable to frame my sentiment for the wall.
