Looking back on the art I’ve been making for the past few months I’ve done quite a bit of digital work. I started really delving into Procreate when we went on Vacation earlier this year, and I haven’t stopped exploring the possibilities since. While planning for our vacation in late February and early March of his year I opted to take only my camera and iPad. No knitting, no sketch book, no art supplies. This was the first time I’d ever taken only my iPad, with the intent of creating art while on a vacation. I had a plan to limit my supplies and challenge myself to only using procreate. My plan worked, I learned a lot about procreate and I enjoyed to process. The biggest thing I learned was how very freeing being able to sit on the couch or the porch at night with just an iPad and a pencil was. There was no figuring out where to put supplies, or how to juggle a sketchbook on my lap, or being confined to the table. The other bonus ...
Hello Lovely. Today's card is part of the Work it Wednesday Challenge over at Simon Says Stamp. The challenge is watercolor and I opted to play with a few of the Distress Oxide Inks from the latest release. The card inspiration is from Kelly Latevola's Watercolor Rainbow Butterflies video that she did a couple of months back.
I'm a huge fan of using my Distress and Distress Oxide Inks for watercoloring, so I knew when I saw the watercolor challenge on Work it Wednesday that I'd be using one of these inks for this card.
I started this card with some Canson Watercolor paper, stamping a sentiment from the Hero Arts Acts of Kindness stamp set in VersaFine Onyx Black ink and then started laying out my butterflies. I used an acrylic block for the butterfly stamping rather than a stamp press to make the pattern building easier. Each butterfly is stamped in VersaMark ink and embossed with Clear Ranger Superfine Detail Embossing Powder.
Once my butterflies were embossed I smooshed each of Distress Oxide colors onto my craft mat. The colors I chose to use were Stormy Sky, Tea Dye, Dusty Concord, Old Paper, and Bundled Sage. I spritzed each color with a little water and then wet the area around the butterflies with clear water before I began applying the color. I used a fine-tipped brush to add a bit of color splatter throughout the card, then hit it with the heat gun to dry down all the colors.
After the panel was dry I die cut it using the Simon Says Wonky Rectangles largest die. I wanted the word Kindness to stand out a bit more so I colored in the open parts of the letters to make it bolder. To finish the card, I mounted the panel unto a black card base.
Thanks for swinging by. If you'd like to see variations of this technique you should check out my post 24 Cards in 7 Days.
